Rockefeller, Illinois, in 1907 left little documentation in the sources I can confidently draw on, so this caption describes the state and region around it. Illinois drew its livelihood from farming, coal mining, and the railroads that carried both goods to Chicago, the great rail and meatpacking center on Lake Michigan. Many small towns of the period grew up around a single mine, mill, or depot, and their fortunes rose and fell with coal prices and harvests. Residents would have measured their year by wages, crop yields, and the trains passing through, while the mining districts were strongholds of the growing miners' unions. This bird's-eye view records a town laid out for those everyday economic concerns.
