Chicago in 1912 was the rail and meatpacking capital of the Midwest, with the stockyards on the South Side, grain elevators and freight yards along the river, and steel and machinery plants spread across the industrial corridors. The city had passed two million residents by the 1910s and was still absorbing immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, who filled the neighborhoods around the packinghouses and mills. Chicagoans knew their town as the place that had rebuilt itself after the 1871 fire, and they took pride in the Loop's office towers, the lakefront parks, and the new Michigan Avenue improvements that were reshaping the downtown skyline. Politics ran through the ward organizations, and the city's transit and street railway fights were daily news.
