Chicago's Chicago and North Western Railway passenger terminal stood at the center of one of the busiest rail hubs in the country in 1912. The city had about 2 million residents and was the nation's rail crossroads, with its stockyards, grain elevators, and steel and machinery plants all tied to the freight cars that ran in and out of its yards. The North Western, which carried commuters and long-distance travelers between Chicago and the upper Midwest, was one of the lines that made the Loop's western edge a constant flow of passengers, baggage, and mail. That summer, the city hosted the Progressive Party convention at the Coliseum, drawing crowds to the same downtown streets that the rail terminals served. Chicagoans of the period knew the district as a place where the city's commerce and its politics met every day.
