Chicago in 1926 was the second-largest city in the United States, with a population of roughly 2.7 million and an economy built on meatpacking, steel, railroads, and grain shipped through its stockyards and rail yards. The skyline shown here was taking shape along the Loop, where office towers rose beside the Chicago River and the elevated train lines. The city was still recovering from the 1919 race riots and was deep into the Prohibition era, when bootlegging and gang rivalries drew national headlines. Chicagoans of the period knew their city as a restless center of commerce, architecture, and ambition, and the 1920s brought a building boom that gave the downtown its distinctive profile.
