Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1908 was a young industrial town south of Chicago, grown up around the rail lines that crossed there. Several railroads met in its yards, and factories and metal works located there to take advantage of freight service that could carry their products to markets across the Midwest. Its population had risen quickly over the previous two decades, bringing in immigrant families from southern and eastern Europe who settled alongside older American households. Residents knew it as a railroad and factory town on the southern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area, where the whistles and switching engines marked the working day. The aerial view of that year shows the crowded rail network and the street grid the town was still filling in.
