Chicago in 1900 was the grain and livestock capital of the interior, and the Board of Trade on LaSalle Street was where wheat, corn, and oats prices were set for farms across the Midwest. The exchange had been founded in 1848, and its trading floor depended on railroads that converged on the city from every direction. Chicago counted about 1.7 million residents at the census that year, many of them immigrants working in the stockyards, lumber yards, and freight houses. Earlier in 1900 the Sanitary and Ship Canal opened, reversing the Chicago River so that sewage flowed away from Lake Michigan's drinking water. Wealth on the financial streets stood only blocks from crowded tenements.
