Buckingham Fountain in Chicago's Grant Park was newly dedicated in 1927, a gift from Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother Clarence, and its tiered basin and sea-horse sculptures were modeled loosely on the Latona fountain at Versailles. Grant Park itself sits on made land along Lake Michigan, filled in over the decades with debris from the 1871 fire and later construction. In 1927 Chicago was one of the largest cities in the country, a rail and stockyard center whose packinghouses, steel mills and machine shops drew workers from across the Midwest and from Europe. Lakefront crowds that summer came to see the fountain's water play, which was lit at night, and the park was the city's main open space on the water.
