Chicago in 1910 was a city of about 2.2 million people, the second largest in the United States, and its economy rested on the stockyards, meatpacking houses, grain elevators, and the rail lines that converged on its yards. Grant Park, the lakefront strip east of Michigan Avenue, had been filled in from the lake in stages and by then hosted parades, public gatherings, and exhibitions. This military tournament, with its mounted and drill demonstrations, drew soldiers and large crowds of city families to watch along the water. Residents knew their city as a rail and packing center whose downtown had been rebuilt after the 1871 fire, and whose new office towers were rising above the Loop.
