Michigan Avenue in Chicago in 1910 was a street in transition, as the city kept filling in land along Lake Michigan to extend its lakefront. The Illinois Central Railroad ran tracks and a terminal along that shoreline, so trains and smoke were part of everyday life nearby. Chicago passed two million residents by 1910, and its stockyards, rail yards, and garment and printing trades drew workers from across Europe and the rural Midwest. Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago, published in 1909, had recommended keeping the lakefront open to the public, and that idea shaped how residents viewed the avenue. Visitors would have known the street for its office buildings and for the Auditorium Building near Congress Street.
