Marion, the seat of Williamson County in southern Illinois, was in 1910 a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the coal fields that lay around it. Mining drew workers and their families from across the region and from abroad, and the county seat served as the place where merchants, lawyers, county officials, and farmers from surrounding hamlets came to do business. Rail lines carried coal and farm goods out of the county, which tied the local economy to distant markets. The courthouse square was the civic center of the town, where residents gathered for court days, elections, and public gatherings, and where people judged the health of the community by the activity of its stores and its streets.
