Chicago hosted the Republican National Convention in June 1920, filling the Coliseum with delegates and party leaders from across the country. The city was then one of the nation's great rail and meatpacking centers, its stockyards and freight yards tying the Midwest to eastern markets, and its population had passed 2.7 million by the 1920 census. Delegates chose Warren G. Harding of Ohio after several ballots, and that fall he faced Democrat James M. Cox in the first national election in which women could vote, since the Nineteenth Amendment had been certified that August. For Chicagoans, the convention brought crowded hotels and busy streets, making national politics a visible part of city life that summer.
