Rock Island, Illinois, in 1907 was a river city whose fortunes were closely tied to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which kept major offices and shops in the town and carried freight and passengers across the Midwest and into the Southwest. Railroad workers, machinists, and mill hands formed a large share of the labor force, and their union halls and church congregations shaped local social life. Augustana College, which had moved to the city in 1875, anchored the community's schooling and Lutheran life. Electric street railways and the first automobiles were beginning to change how residents crossed between the island, the Illinois shore, and Davenport on the far side of the Mississippi. People of the day would have known Rock Island as a rail and river town on the Iowa border, still growing into the new century.
