Augustana College stood on the bluffs above the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois, in 1914, a Lutheran school founded by Swedish immigrants that had moved to the city in 1875. Rock Island was a railroad and manufacturing town, home to railroad shops and the federal arsenal on the river island that gave the city its name, and neighboring Moline drew many of the same Swedish workers to its farm-implement factories. The college trained pastors, teachers, and young people of the Swedish-American community, many of whom still worshiped and studied partly in Swedish. In the year war broke out in Europe, the campus was a source of pride for families who had come west to work in the mills and shops.
