Starved Rock, a sandstone bluff above the Illinois River near Utica in LaSalle County, was a young state park in 1914, after the state acquired the land in 1911. Visitors reached it by rail and by boat from nearby towns, and the valley views shown here drew day-trippers eager to see the river country. The bluff's name comes from a legend of Illinois Confederation people trapped on its summit by enemies in the 1700s, a story local residents and park promoters retold often. Along the river, the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the valley's sandstone quarries had long shaped the local economy, and farming and river trade still supported most families around Utica.
