In 1914, Normal, Illinois, was a small college town in McLean County, just north of Bloomington, and its identity rested almost entirely on Illinois State Normal University, the state's first public school for training teachers, founded in 1857. The town had grown up around the campus, and its streets, boarding houses, shops, and rail connections served students and faculty who came from across the state to prepare for classrooms in rural schools and growing cities alike. The university's campus training school gave future teachers hands-on practice, which made the institution a point of local pride and a steady source of employment. Residents of Normal and Bloomington would have known the school as the center of civic and social life, with its public events, lectures, and athletic contests drawing crowds from both communities. The panoramic view records the campus as it stood in the years before the university's later expansion.
