In 1914, DeKalb, Illinois, was a farm town on the Kishwaukee valley whose reputation rested largely on barbed wire, which Joseph Glidden had patented there in 1874 and which brought the town lasting business. The Northern Illinois State Normal School, opened in 1895, stood as the town's other great institution, training teachers for the rural schools that surrounded it. Many of its graduates returned to one-room classrooms across the northern counties, so the campus was known throughout the region as a source of teachers. Railroad lines carried farm produce and students in and out of town, linking the school to Chicago and the surrounding farm country.
