Joliet, Illinois, in 1914 was a river city of brick and stone, where the Illinois and Michigan Canal ran through town beside lumber yards and wholesale houses. Joliet Township High School had opened a junior college in 1901 that drew students who might otherwise have gone straight to work. Downtown streets were lined with commercial blocks, and church and Fourth of July picnics filled the riverbanks with families from the east and south sides. Many residents had relatives in Poland, Italy, and Bohemia, so the European war that began in August 1914 was closely followed in local homes. The town still saw itself as the Will County seat and a trading center as much as a manufacturing place.
