Bloomington, Illinois, in 1914 was a county seat of about 25,000 people whose economy still rested on railroad shops, grain and livestock trade, and farm implements. Interurban electric lines had begun linking the city with towns across central Illinois, offering residents a cheaper way to reach neighboring communities than the steam trains. In August 1914, Europe's war began, and local readers of the Pantagraph, the city's daily newspaper, followed the first news from abroad while the town's farm and rail business carried on. Residents would have known Bloomington as a steady, Republican-leaning city of brick storefronts, churches, and courthouse traffic, with automobiles beginning to crowd streets once given over to horses and wagons.
