In 1914, Northern State Normal School in DeKalb, Illinois, was a teacher-training college that had opened in 1895 to supply instructors for the state's expanding public schools. DeKalb was a small city in the Kishwaukee valley, with an economy built on corn, dairy farming, and the barbed wire works that had made the town known well beyond Illinois since the 1870s. Students arriving on the Chicago and North Western line often walked from the depot up to classes in the school's brick halls. Graduates of places like this one were in steady demand across the state, and the campus was among the town's main civic institutions.
