In 1914, the Illinois River valley near Utica in LaSalle County was a place where farming, river traffic, and a growing number of summer visitors shared the same ground. The state had acquired the sandstone bluff at Starved Rock only a few years earlier, in 1911, and it was beginning to draw day-trippers from Ottawa, Peru, and nearby towns who came by rail and by boat to climb its trails. Local people knew the rock for the old story that Illiniwek warriors starved on its summit during a siege by enemy tribes, a tale repeated in schoolbooks and tourist brochures. Along the river, the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the steamboats and barges that worked the channel still linked this stretch of country to Chicago and the Mississippi.
