Decatur, Illinois, in 1909 was a manufacturing and railroad town of roughly 20,000 people on the Sangamon River in Macon County, with factories, grain handling, and rail lines serving the surrounding farm country. James Millikin University, named for the Decatur banker and businessman whose bequest founded it, was still young, having only recently begun classes on its campus in the city's north side. For Decatur residents, the school was a source of civic pride, a place where local families could pursue higher education without leaving home. This panoramic view records the campus as a community landmark, showing the buildings that stood for a new institution in a city whose economy depended on industry, commerce, and the agricultural trade that flowed through it.
