Champaign and Urbana in 1909 were neighboring railroad towns, with the University of Illinois campus on the Urbana side. Central Illinois sat in some of the richest corn country in the nation, and the university's College of Agriculture, under Dean Eugene Davenport, had made farm instruction central to its work. This photograph shows a corn course, where students learned to judge ears by shape, color, and kernel depth, skills that mattered to a region where one good harvest could decide a farm's year. Many students came from farm families and returned home to work the land or teach in rural schools. For most people outside the state, the university was the main reason the name Champaign was known at all.
