Springfield, the Illinois state capital, hosted the state fair on its fairgrounds in 1909, and the grandstand in this photograph would have been the place where crowds gathered for horse races, programs, and speeches. The city was still a center of state government, and it was closely tied to farming, coal mining, and the railroads that carried both through central Illinois. That year Springfield also marked the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, a local point of pride, since Lincoln had practiced law there and was buried nearby. Agricultural exhibits of livestock, grain, and machinery drew families from farms across the state, and the fair was one of the largest public gatherings of the year. For many residents, the fairgrounds stood as a reminder that the capital's prosperity rested on the land around it.
