Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1916 was a wealthy lakeside town on Chicago's North Shore, founded in the 1850s by Presbyterians who built it around a church and a college. By then its streets were lined with large estates belonging to Chicago merchants and manufacturers, many of whom rode the North Western commuter trains into the city each morning. A country fair like this one, held in the warm months, gathered residents and their neighbors for exhibits, games and social visiting, a calendar that set the town apart from the industrial city to the south. The United States had not yet entered the war raging in Europe, and talk of that conflict mixed with local concerns about prosperity and readiness.
