Chicago hosted the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, a six-month fair held in Jackson Park on the South Side lakefront to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. Its white neoclassical palaces, planned under Daniel Burnham and set in grounds shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted, drew millions of visitors from across the country. The city was still proud of its recovery from the Great Fire of 1871, and the fair showcased its rise as a center of manufacturing, railroads, and grain trade. The exposition opened just as the Panic of 1893 spread through the economy, which made its crowds and spending all the more notable. Many visitors remembered the fair for its electric lights and George Ferris's giant new wheel.
