Farmer City, a small agricultural town in DeWitt County in central Illinois, depended on the Illinois Central Railroad in 1909. The main line carried farm produce and livestock from the surrounding fields toward Chicago and southern markets, and grain elevators and stock pens stood along the tracks. A derailment on that line was a local event that drew townspeople and nearby farmers to the scene. Train wrecks were a common hazard of the era, when heavy trains and wooden cars made serious accidents frequent across the Midwest. This image records one such crash on the Illinois Central at Farmer City, a reminder of how closely the railroad shaped daily life in towns like this one.
