Zion City, Illinois, in 1904 was a religious community barely three years old, founded in 1901 on the Lake Michigan shore about 35 miles north of Chicago by the Scottish-born evangelist John Alexander Dowie. Dowie ran the town as a theocracy, banning tobacco, liquor, and pork, and he built its economy around church-owned enterprises such as a lace and linen works, a printing plant, and a bank. The Shiloh Tabernacle, shown here, was the largest gathering place of his Christian Catholic Church, where his followers sang, prayed, and heard him preach on divine healing. Within a few years, financial troubles and a bitter fight over Dowie's authority would split the city, but in 1904 the tabernacle stood for the community's hopes of a self-contained holy city.
