Chicago in 1904 was a city of about 1.7 million people, and its economy rested on the stockyards, meatpacking, railroad freight, and the grain and commodity trading of the Loop. Lake Michigan gave the city its harbor, and the Sanitary and Ship Canal, opened in 1900, had recently reversed the flow of the Chicago River to carry sewage away from the lake. Civic life was lively and often contentious, with machine politics shaping city hall and neighborhoods divided by language and class. The Iroquois theater fire of December 1903 had killed more than 500 people, and the city was still grieving and debating public safety when this crowd gathered for the Great American Derby. Residents of the day would have known the city first for its commerce and its rapid growth.
