In 1904 the University of Chicago was only about a dozen years old, having opened in 1892 on the South Side with funding from John D. Rockefeller and a plan led by its first president, William Rainey Harper. Its Gothic quadrangles stood near the Midway Plaisance, the long strip left from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The campus sat in a city of more than a million people, a rail and meatpacking center whose stockyards and factories drew workers and investment. Football under coach Amos Alonzo Stagg had already brought the school public attention, and the campus was becoming a meeting point for the city's new wealth and ambitions.
