Chicago's waterfront in 1906 was the working edge of a city of roughly two million people, where the Chicago River met Lake Michigan and the docks handled lumber, coal, grain, and iron ore. Ships and barges crowded the river slips while railroad lines ran along the shore, linking the lake trade to the rail network that made Chicago the country's central freight hub. The city had reversed the flow of its river in 1900 with the Sanitary and Ship Canal, a project meant to carry sewage away from the lake that supplied its drinking water. Residents also knew the port as the place where Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel *The Jungle* drew attention to the packing houses, and the city's business and civic life still centered on the grain and shipping trade close to these piers.
