Chicago's waterfront in 1912 was still a crowded working edge, where lake steamers, river tugs, and freight cars shared space in a city of more than two million people counted in the 1910 census. The Illinois Central Railroad ran its tracks along the lake front, so freight and passengers moved between downtown and the rest of the city's industries with little pause. That June the Republican National Convention met in Chicago, and in August the new Progressive Party gathered there, where Theodore Roosevelt accepted its nomination for president. Many of the men who loaded and unloaded ships lived in immigrant neighborhoods of Poles, Bohemians, and Irish a short walk from the wharves.
