Chicago's waterfront in 1907 was the working edge of a city of roughly two million people, where the Chicago River and the lake front handled much of the freight moving through the Midwest. Grain elevators, lumber yards, and warehouses crowded the riverbanks, and the Sanitary and Ship Canal, opened in 1900, had reversed the river's flow away from Lake Michigan, giving the city a second route for barges and steamers. Ships carried iron ore, coal, and grain, while the rail lines that met in the city moved goods on to every part of the country. Residents also knew the lake front as a place of public parks and recreation, and as a reminder of the 1871 fire that had leveled much of the city before its rebuilding.
