Chicago hosted the 1904 Republican National Convention in June of that year, and this panoramic photograph shows the hall where delegates gathered to renominate Theodore Roosevelt, who had taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901. In 1904 Chicago was among the largest cities in the country, with about 1.7 million residents, and its economy rested on railroads, the stockyards, meatpacking, grain elevators, and lumber moving through the city. Political life was loud and crowded, and the convention drew party leaders, newspaper reporters, and out-of-town visitors who filled the city's hotels and streetcars. Many Chicagoans still remembered the 1871 fire that destroyed much of the city and the rebuilding that followed, which had turned it into a showcase of commercial ambition.
