Zion City, Illinois, in 1904 was a planned religious community about 40 miles north of Chicago on the Lake Michigan shore, founded in 1901 by the Scottish-born evangelist John Alexander Dowie. Its residents followed Dowie's strict rules, which banned tobacco, alcohol, and pork, and they worked in the community's own enterprises, including a lace mill and a printing and publishing plant that produced the church paper, *Leaves of Healing*. Dowie's Christian Catholic Church ran the town's government and daily life, and its followers were known across the country as "Dowieites." Within a few years, financial troubles and a bitter power struggle would weaken Dowie's control, and he was removed from leadership in 1906.
