Zion City, a religious community founded in 1901 on the Lake Michigan shore about 40 miles north of Chicago, held this industrial parade in July 1904 to show what its residents had built. Under John Alexander Dowie, a Scottish-born faith healer who led the Christian Catholic Church, the town was planned as a dry settlement with no tobacco or liquor, and members were encouraged to work in its own shops and mills rather than in outside factories. The lace works and the printing plant were among the main employers, and Dowie's weekly paper, Leaves of Healing, was produced there. Marching workers and trade groups in the parade were meant to demonstrate that the community could support itself economically as well as spiritually.
