Zion, Illinois, in 1904 was a planned religious community on the shore of Lake Michigan in Lake County, about 40 miles north of Chicago. Its founder, the Scottish-born faith healer John Alexander Dowie, had established it as a theocratic settlement under his Christian Catholic Church, and he ran it with strict rules that banned tobacco, alcohol, and the practice of medicine by doctors. Members worked in the town's church-owned industries, including printing, lace making, and building trades, and the community's publications and businesses drew visitors and outside attention. Officers and singers like those in this photograph were central to the church's public life, which centered on worship, music, and Dowie's sermons. By the time the picture was made, Dowie's authority and the town's finances were under growing strain, and within a few years his leadership would be challenged and then ended.
