Alton, Illinois, sat on the bluffs above the Mississippi River in 1908, a short distance upriver from St. Louis, and its economy rested on river trade, rail lines, and factories. The Chicago and Alton Railroad was headquartered there, and the city's glass works and the Western Cartridge Company's ammunition plant gave many families steady wages. Alton also carried a heavier past: the abolitionist editor Elijah Lovejoy was killed there in 1837 when a mob destroyed his press, and the Lincoln-Douglas debate was held in the city in 1858. Residents in 1908 would have known Alton as a manufacturing and river town with a long memory of those events, a place where its mills, rail yards, and riverfront defined daily life.
