In 1908, the Wood River Refinery stood on the Mississippi bottomland in Madison County, Illinois, near East St. Louis, where Standard Oil Company (Indiana) had built one of its newer plants. Demand for kerosene, gasoline, and lubricants was rising as automobiles and motor-driven machinery spread across the Midwest. The county was already a busy rail and river center, and East St. Louis was known for its stockyards, meatpacking, smelting, and freight traffic. Workers at the refinery and in the nearby villages of Wood River and Roxana relied on its wages, and the flat riverside site made it practical to receive crude oil and ship finished products. The panorama shows an industrial landscape taking shape as the region became part of American petroleum refining.
