Alton, Illinois, sat on the Mississippi bluffs above the confluence with the Missouri, and in 1908 it was a river and railroad town of factories, mills, and rail yards tied to the Chicago and Alton line. The Western Military Academy, a boarding school for boys that ran drill, classroom work, and athletics on its grounds, was one of the institutions that gave the city a reputation beyond its industry. Cadets in uniform marched and trained on these lawns, and their parents, many from farther up the river and across central Illinois, sent them there for discipline and a college-preparatory course. Alton residents of that era also remembered their city as the site of Elijah Lovejoy's 1837 death at the hands of a mob and of the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debate, both of which still shaped local pride.
