Illinois in 1905 ran on railroads, and the Chicago and Alton line tied Chicago to St. Louis across the prairie through towns such as Joliet and Bloomington. The Alton Limited was the line's premier passenger train, carrying businessmen, traveling salesmen and families between the two cities in Pullman sleeping and dining cars. Chicago was the country's main rail hub, and its stockyards, grain elevators and factories depended on freight and passenger schedules like this one. Railroads employed large numbers of engineers, firemen, conductors, shopmen and station agents along the route, and a train photographed in this era was often a point of local pride for the crews and towns it served.
