This panoramic photograph shows the Illinois Senate in session in 1905, when Springfield, the state capital, was a government town as much as a market town. Illinois's economy that decade rested on Chicago's stockyards and packing houses, southern coal fields, farming across the prairie, and a dense web of railroads, and the decisions made in the Senate chamber affected all of them. Charles Deneen had taken office as governor in January 1905, so the men gathered here were debating a state government that was expanding to meet the needs of a fast-growing population. Most Illinoisans would have known Springfield chiefly as Abraham Lincoln's city and as the place where laws on railroads, schools, and labor were made. The photograph records a moment when the legislature's authority over a booming industrial state was very much on display.
