Chicago in 1907 was the center of the American farm machinery trade, and International Harvester, formed in 1902 from the merger of the McCormick and Deering companies with several smaller makers, kept major plants on the city's West Side. Its reapers, binders, and mowers traveled by rail to farms across the Midwest and beyond, linking Chicago's factories to the grain fields that fed a growing nation. The city had grown past two million residents by the end of the decade, and its rail yards, stockyards, and lake port made it the region's economic engine. Immigrant neighborhoods surrounded the factories, and thousands of families depended on the plants for steady wages. To many residents, the Harvester works stood as a clear sign of Chicago's industrial strength.
