In 1917, the Great Lakes Naval Training Station occupied a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline in northern Illinois, near the town of Waukegan and a short distance north of Chicago. The Navy had established the base only a few years earlier, and after the United States entered the First World War that April, it expanded quickly to receive and train large numbers of enlisted recruits. New barracks, drill fields, and classrooms went up to handle the steady stream of young men arriving from across the Midwest and beyond. For residents of Lake County and the Chicago area, the station had become a major part of wartime life, bringing new people, payrolls, and military activity to a region that had long depended on lake commerce and manufacturing.
