Camp Grant, on farmland outside Rockford, Illinois, was established in 1917, after the United States entered the First World War. The federal government chose the site to train draftees and volunteers for the new National Army, and the camp filled with thousands of men learning drill and marksmanship. Rockford was a manufacturing city on the Rock River, known for its furniture factories and machine and implement works, which turned out goods for the war effort. Residents saw troop trains come and go, and soldiers on passes became a familiar sight downtown. This 1917 view shows a camp still new and raw, its barracks laid out in rows across ground that had recently been fields.
