Rockford, Illinois, in 1911 was a manufacturing city of roughly 45,000 people on both banks of the Rock River in the northern part of the state. Its factories produced furniture, knitted goods, and farm machinery, and the river's falls had long supplied the water power that drew mills to the site. Many residents were of Swedish descent, and their churches and societies stood alongside the families of New England and German origin who had settled there earlier. Railroad lines carried finished goods out to Chicago, the regional market on which much of the city's output depended. Residents would have known Rockford as a practical, hard-working industrial town, with its smokestacks and riverfront marking it as a place built on production.
