Kirkland, a small village in DeKalb County in northern Illinois, sat in the heart of a farming region in 1909, when corn, oats, hogs, cattle, and sheep made up much of the local economy. Its rail connection let farmers and shippers move livestock to the large markets in Chicago, where the stockyards and packing houses drew animals from across the upper Midwest. Pens like these were a working part of village life, where buyers, drovers, and teamsters came and went with the seasons and the train schedules. The sheep yards show a town whose prosperity depended on the railroad and on the steady demand for meat and wool in the big city to the east.
