Chicago in July 1915 was a city of meatpacking yards, steel mills, and rail lines, and on July 24 the excursion steamer Eastland rolled onto its side at its Clark Street dock on the Chicago River. The ship was loading employees of the Western Electric Company's Hawthorne Works in Cicero and their families for an outing to Michigan City, Indiana, when it capsized while still tied up, killing 844 people, most of them women and children. It remains the deadliest disaster in the city's history. Investigators later pointed to the vessel's instability, including extra lifeboats added high on the upper decks and problems with ballast. The tragedy left Chicagoans with lasting questions about how passenger ships on the river were inspected.
