Galena, Illinois, in 1915 was a river town living on its past. Its fortune had been built on lead mining in the 1820s and 1830s, when miners and merchants poured into the Fever River valley, and the town's brick and stone commercial buildings still crowded the narrow bottomland along the river. By 1915 the mines had long since played out, and the steamboat trade that once carried ore and supplies had faded, leaving the town quieter than its size suggested. Local residents knew Galena above all as the hometown of Ulysses S. Grant, whose connection drew visitors and kept its streets and houses in the public eye. This view from the north shows the valley and the hillside homes that rose above the old commercial district.
