Naperville, Illinois, in 1915 was a farm town about thirty miles west of Chicago, with its growth tied to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad that had reached it in the 1860s. Surrounding prairie farms supplied much of its trade, and many residents were of German descent, which gave the town's churches a strong presence. The Evangelical Association, a denomination rooted in German-speaking pietist and Methodist traditions, had a congregation here, and its services and church life were central to many families' weekly routines. This view of the church and its surroundings shows a community that still saw itself as agricultural and neighborly, not yet as a Chicago suburb.
