Galena, Illinois, in 1915 was a river town of a few thousand people that had outlived its boom. Lead mining in the 1820s and 1830s had made it one of the busiest places in the state, and steamboats on the Galena River and the Mississippi once carried its ore and goods. The railroads that arrived in the 1850s pulled much of the trade toward Chicago and other cities, so by the early twentieth century the town's economy rested on smaller businesses, farming in the surrounding county, and its brick storefronts along Main Street. Locals also knew it as the hometown of Ulysses S. Grant, who had clerked in his family's leather goods store there before the Civil War and whose house on High Street was a point of local pride.
